Newborns

People often ask me if I photograph newborns.
Yes… I do. Just a few.
But my perspective on newborn photography changed nearly two years ago when my granddaughter was born.
Our little one faced some challenges and spent time in the NICU. That experience changed the way I look at those first precious days of life — not only as a photographer, but as a grandmother.
Years ago, newborn sessions were often scheduled before a baby was even 10 days old. I can remember dads calling me directly from the hospital to reserve a session. At the time, it never fully occurred to me how overwhelming those early days could be for new parents.
Many photographers still photograph newborns that young, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But my approach today is different.
Now, I begin by simply checking on Mom.
A few days after the birth, I ask her how she’s feeling. Her answer helps guide me in deciding when the best time might be for baby’s first portraits. Because while newborn images are beautiful and fleeting, I also want the experience itself to feel peaceful, gentle, and joyful for everyone involved — mom, dad, and baby.
Those first weeks are emotional, exhausting, beautiful, and life-changing all at once. Babies are so connected to their mothers during that season that many dads quietly wonder, “What happened to all our plans?”
But trust me… those plans will unfold. It may simply happen more slowly than you expected.
If you are expecting and would love beautiful portraits of your baby, I would love to meet with you ahead of time and talk through a plan that feels right for your family. There is no “one size fits all” approach here.
Because this season passes in the blink of an eye.
And if you’re pregnant and reading this — congratulations. Your life is about to change forever. I often say my own life became even richer after my son was born. Every story is different, but one thing is certain: your heart is about to grow in ways you cannot yet imagine.
