The Forgotten Age: Amanda's story
Jul 1 2026 | By: Cathy Benton
The Forgotten Age portrait experience is about celebrating life—not someday, but today.
Most often, you'll hear me talk about the children who step into these sessions. Childhood passes so quickly, and it deserves to be remembered. But every so often, I have the privilege of creating that same experience for an extraordinary woman.
Women spend so much of their lives caring for everyone around them. They pour themselves into their families, their friends, their work, and their communities. Somewhere along the way, they often forget to see themselves.
As a photographer, I have the unique privilege of seeing what others sometimes overlook. It is difficult to explain, but within minutes I can often sense someone's spirit—the quiet strength, the kindness, the joy that lives beneath the surface. Those are the women who deserve to be celebrated. They may not realize how priceless they are to the people who love them or the place they hold in this world.
Let me tell you about one of those women.
Her name is Amanda.
When Amanda arrived at the studio, the experience began with a little pampering. My wonderful hair and makeup artist transformed her look, even adding hair extensions to create the vision I had imagined. Then came the gown—a beautiful dress that somehow seemed as though it had always belonged to her.
(There's a story behind that dress, but I'll save that for another time.)
Amanda was quiet.
Not simply quiet—but the kind of quiet that says, "What have I done?"
She looked up at me with a hint of uncertainty and softly said, "I need to tell you something."
"Of course," I replied.
"I feel guilty doing this."
I asked her why.
"Because it's just me. Not my family."
I smiled because I knew exactly what she meant. In fact, I hear those words far more often than you might imagine.
I told her, "It's going to be okay. You deserve this. You spend so much of your life taking care of everyone else. Today is your turn."
She wasn't convinced yet—but I was.
I knew this experience would become one of those memories she would carry with her for a very long time.
The truth is, I had met Amanda several months earlier, and from that very first meeting I knew I wanted to photograph her. I couldn't explain why. I simply followed that quiet feeling we sometimes get when something feels right.
So I began searching for the perfect gown.
Eventually, I found one that stopped me in my tracks. It felt as though it had been made just for her. I ordered it from a designer in Hungary without ever mentioning a portrait session to Amanda.
The dress was called Hazel.
After the session, I spent time creating the finished artwork. When everything was ready, Amanda and her husband, Vincent, came to the studio to see the portraits for the first time.
Before we began, I asked how she was feeling.
"I'm nervous," she admitted.
She didn't need to be.
As her portraits appeared on the screen, I watched her expression begin to change. The uncertainty slowly gave way to something else—recognition. She saw herself the way the rest of us had all along.
Beautiful.
Strong.
Graceful.
Worth celebrating.
By the time we reached the end of the presentation, she could finally exhale.
Later in our conversation, Amanda and Vincent mentioned that they had traveled to Hungary and had fallen in love with the country.
Then came one final surprise.
Hazel— the name of the gown—had been Amanda's grandmother's name.
In that moment, it felt as though every quiet nudge that had led me to choose that dress had been exactly right.
Vincent loved every portrait.
And once Amanda allowed herself to believe it...
...she loved them too.
That is the true meaning of a Forgotten Age portrait experience.
Life is worth celebrating now.
Not when you've lost the weight.
Not when life slows down.
Not when the children are grown.
Now.
Because one day, today's version of you will become a treasured memory for someone you love.
And perhaps most importantly...
She deserves to be remembered, too.
