How Social Media Affects the Small Businesses You Love
Jun 11, 2025 | By: Cathy Benton Portraits
Have you ever “liked” a post, commented on a beautiful portrait, or shared something that moved you? You may not realize it, but every little tap and swipe helps more than you think—especially for small, local businesses like mine.
Recently, social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have started using something called AI (artificial intelligence) to help decide who sees each post or ad. It’s more advanced than the old days of simple “likes”—now it tries to guess who might truly love what’s being shared.
That sounds smart, right? And it is! But here’s the tricky part: if a page gets most of its engagement from other business owners or people who aren’t likely to become clients, the system may think that’s who the content is for—and start showing it to more people just like them.
So what can you do?
If you’ve ever had a session with me and loved your experience—your kind words, comments, shares, and reactions truly make a difference. They help more moms, dads, and grandparents find the kind of meaningful portrait experience you had. And they remind the social media platforms that this art matters—to real people, in real families, who will treasure it for generations.
The truth is, my work isn’t just about pretty pictures. It’s about memories, legacies, and making children feel seen and celebrated. And in a world where algorithms are constantly changing, your voice helps keep that message alive.
From the bottom of my heart—thank you. ❤️
