This type of finishing originated with the Old Master Painters of the renaissance era. Back then nearly all paintings were done on a canvas wrapped around a stretcher frame. Once the painting was completed it was then framed and displayed proudly on the wall.
A modern twist on this age old idea was to simply hang the stretcher frame on the wall with no frame at all. This gave the image a more contemporary look and is popular today in homes that reflect that same décor,
