New Mommy advice from Old Mommies

We

Question: “If you’re best friend or daughter was pregnant, what piece of advice would you want to share with her that you wish someone had shared with you?”

This was the topic of a contest we had a few months ago. The answers were wonderful. As I remember being a young mom with no one to ask advice from, I wish I had access to such a heartfelt list.

Here is just a little of the advice offered:

1. Sleep while the baby sleeps. We all hear it. And few adhere to the advice. However, if you do (and eventually you do) your life will be so much esier. The dishes can wait – so can the laundry. If you’re exhausted – the baby will sense it and you will both feel the pain:)
2. If you baby has an upset tummy (gas or constipation) try adding a drop of Dark Karo syrup to the bottle and it works like gas drops but it’s all natural. Corn sugra you know.
3. I wish I would have know that being a mama was more instinct than it is learned behavior (probably to the dismay of some book publishers) and, I would tell my friend to relax and enjoy every single day with her child.

There is lots more advice to give. Every new Mommy that comes into our studio for a consult get a chart that I created over the years about the best times to have your child photographed (for the first 18 years of their life) and now we’re adding this little booklet of advice. All created with love from one Mommy to another.

Weight no more

Okay so I’m going out on a limb here and going to write about the dreaded excuse that even I use to keep from having a new portrait created.

So many times when we talk to moms about doing their family portrait I here “Well, when I loose some weight, I’ll have one done with me in there too”.

I cringe every time I hear those words. Why – because I know the truth. I know because I too have said those words. And I know that the weight that I think I need to loose seems to make a permanent home round my hips. It’s like a friend that came to visit and never went home. icon smile Why weight??? Wait no longer. I do understand. I know that most people do not like the way they look in pictures. I also know that your family loves you just the way you are. The way you are is the way they will always remember you, loving, happy, caring, sincere, sensitive, brave, kind – all those things are what your family thinks of when they see you – they DO NOT see your weight. I know you’re self conscious. I am too. But with the professional advice from our staff on clothing choice and location, hair and makeup – not to mention the digital techniques that are available today to help you look your BEST – there really is no good reason not to have that family portrait created that you have really longed for. Most of us will never look better than we do RIGHT NOW! Don’t wait – we can help remove some of the weight through carefully designed portrait guides, posing and retouch.

I have very few images of my mother, one with her and my son when he was about 8 and NONE of she and I. Do I regret not having a portrait of us together? You bet I do. She always hated that her hair was getting whiter and her wrinkles were getting worse and she had gained 10 pounds. There were a hundred reason not to have a photograph made of the two of us. There were lots of pictures of just me (as an only child – that was a no- brainer) but NON – NOT one professionally created images of the two of us.

Don’t let that happen to you. Call today and let’s talk about creating an image of you and your family that you will be thrilled with – AND your kids will thank you for it one day. I promise they will!

The weight is over -Call now – wait no longer – 757-484-1777.

P.S. -Everyone wants to look thinner but never any more than a beautiful bride. Happy and happier!

 Why weight??? Wait no longer.

A bride wants to look her best

S.P.S.
Okay so someone said to me “but it’s not “real” – what do you have to say to that? I say, its as real as you want it to be. I haven’t always been a big as I am now. Yes, and I suppose in my mind I don’t think I look as big as I do so why wouldn’t I want a portrait of me and my family that closer matches what I remember? There is absolutely NO reason why not. We do lots of things that aren’t real – acrylic nails, hair extensions, hair color, braces on our teeth, tanning beds, we wear black to look thinner and stiletto heels to look taller – what’s the difference? Not a thing – except that a portrait of you and your family will last far longer than any of the other things you do to make yourself look better and you’ll be glad you did. I was!

School Pictures but Better

school pictures

nogic school days1 240x300 School Pictures but BetterI remember when I was a kid – it seemed like every single time it was picture day I had a bunch of cold sores on my lips. Seriously – like the same time every year. Now I realize it was the stress of starting school again and picture day was early into the year. My loving mother would buy every one of them. She was a single mom way before it was okay to be a single mom and she couldn’t afford much but she LOVED pictures. I have them all still. Knowing what I know about digital photography today, boy do I wish it was today instead of 30+ years ago.

I also remember the school pictures that my son brought home. Wow – 30 years didn’t seem to make too much difference in the “school picture” realm. Most of the time, I forgot it was picture day so he wasn’t dressed for it or his hair needed to be cut or he would have art or lunch before his turn and well -I’m sure you know what that meant. And like my mother, I bought every one of them.

We know how hectic it is at the beginning of the year. We also know how important those “record” photography are of your children. So we have started a tradition here at Cathy L. Benton Photography. Yup, its school pictures only “better”. Why better? Because you get to make your appointment when it is convenient to you and you will be ready for your child pictures then. You can order more the day of the session. If they need to be retouched, I’ll retouch it for free. We’ll take the time to be sure your child’s clothes are on straight and their hair is in place AND well work to get that smile that you love so much. Your pictures will be ready in about 10 days. And we guarantee the work. You’re experience will be a good one and the pictures will be terrific.
